THE BINS + SOLE Release Remixes of ‘INSPIRATION’ Out Today

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:24 pm

the_bins_inspiration_20111006large550The Bins and Sole breathe endless possibilities into their Inspiration EP. It starts off with the single of the same name where Sole’s stream of consciousness style rapping is complimented by a similar stream of consciousness sounding combination of sampled beats. The Bins samples everything from jazzy piano riffs to heavenly strings to East Asian sitars, and what sounds like a cacophony of a selection actually comes together into a harmonious meditation on inspiration. Sole’s rhymes ride these beats like waves and his ideas surf along them as he raps for the 99%, the downtrodden, and those who need the inspiration to have the courage to “do what you love.”

As if the single wasn’t good enough, the remixes are inspired with their own unique interpretation on the original. The Dreader Remix chills it down running some beats in reverse and bringing in soulful vocal samples to create a base for the rhymes to rise up into your ears. The rap is also central in the Danny Spiteri Remix which uses ambient and airy layers of music and makes you feel like your floating through the clouds of Sole’s endless possibilities. THE FLYING SKULLS Release ‘West Coast Bass’ on 1320 Records Today

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:36 pm

Following the departure last year of Snareface, The Flying Skulls‘ Jeff Wareham (J.Tonal) enlisted the help of keyboardist Jacob Hernandez, a.k.a. Esau, to tie together a collection of original tracks, remixes, and collaborations celebrating the scope and history of the bass-laden sonic revolution of the past couple of years that began in pockets of the Bay Area and L.A. and exploded outwards. The result is West Coast Bass, a 10-track history lesson out today on 1320 Records. Inspired greatly by glitch-hop, dubstep, downtempo, and 90’s R&B, WCB details the shifting sounds that have defined a whole new generation of producers. The Skulls have been Bay Area fixtures, with J. Tonal producing and locally promoting in San Francisco for nearly a decade. Sharing bills and compilations with some of the biggest acts of the day (most notably Bassnectar, Prefuse 73, The Glitch Mob, and more), the act has the perspective necessary to examine the changing musical environment with their latest effort.

The opening track, “Beats by the Pound,” has a distinctly early-90’s Dr. Dre feel. Audio Angel introduces the featured players, which include the U.K.’s Mudmowth and licks from livetronica superstars Lotus. Funky, and delectably old-school, the bouncy opener sets the stage for an album which runs the gamut from rip-roaring bass blasts to sharply dressed downtempo that lets well-place wobbles ripple out into space without stepping on each others’ toes. Those who may have been dwelling underneath large rocks for the past few years might use this album as a Zagat-style guide to the beautiful landscape that is West Coast Bass.  -theuntz.com

Picking up where their debut “Gills and a Helmet” left off, the songs featured on “Sunflowers” combine the soulful, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals of Lucas Dix with the whimsical melodies and grounding beats of Jeffrey Acciaioli’s production. The release’s title track is a chlorophyll colored piece showcasing the musical and personal growth of the duo. Blooming over a jazzy, drum and bass influenced hook, Dix croons the chorus “I’ve a long way to go”, highlighting the cycles of a seemingly endless journey. The second track is a wine soaked remix of fellow Portland artist Natasha Kmeto’s “Want You Too”, an R&B/Hiphop manifestation of summer time love at dusk. Together both songs present a vibrant soundtrack of transition, whether it be the slow change of summer to fall, the ending of a relationship, or the desire to break free of stagnation and grow towards the light.

Sunflowers” will be available with 1320 Records and at www.jellyfishbrigade.com for FREE on Thursday, October 20th, 2011.

The Brain Trush Label Series: Art Before Commerce at 1320 Records

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:47 pm

Great article on 1320 Records on trustthebrain.com blog today.
Picture 4
Record labels are perpetually treading the line between art and commerce. And when it comes to mega labels like Sony and Universal, commerce virtually always reigns supreme. In other words, if the record isn’t projected to pad the exec’s pockets, it likely never sees the light of day. Consequently, though a group like Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) exhibits innovative musicianship and boasts some of the most impressive touring statistics in the country, their instrumental and at times abstract qualities would likely leave their albums shelved at one of the aforementioned institutions.

But fortunately for all those artists whose sound doesn’t conform to mainstream sensibilities, STS9 refused to bow to those politics and established their own independent, boutique label “1320 Records,” providing a framework of support and openness that allows the more localized, grassroots label to release the content it wants, when it wants to. Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:48 pm

Before we release our new single “Sunflowers” next Thursday, October 20th, we are making Jellyfish Brigade’s debut EP “Gills And A Helmet” available at 1320 Records.  This album is poised to give listeners a taste of the duo’s inventive, heart-felt love songs that blur the lines between hip-hop, folk, electronica, and R&B.  Physical copies are also available at www.jellyfishbrigade.com.

“Acciaioli and Dix have taken an unusual combination of genres and made them into a unique, fresh sound for their listeners to discover” –The Untz

“Dix’s vocals fit smoothly over the beats and represent the small (but great) aspects of an average life. Hope, love, regret, change, and spirit are all themes throughout this beautiful record that definitely deserves a spot on your daily playlist.” –The Lucy Rae

“Electro, glitchy, head noddy, Spacek on a houseboat, Jellyfish Brigade had me at the beats, beaten by Jeffrey Acciaiol (aka The Great Mundane), and when paired with the relaxed, familiar and comfortable flow of Lucas Dix, I was publicly knighted as a fan of the JB.” SYFFAL

THE FLYING SKULLS The First Pre-Release From The Album, “Beats by the Pound” FREE

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:16 pm

TheFlyingSkulls-BeatsByThePound-AlbumArt550

Deep in the lab The Flying Skulls have spent the last year and a half putting together a crunked outpost-dubstepalbum specifically for 1320 Records which spans a wide breadth of West Coast styles, aptly named ‘West Coast Bass.‘  The ten track album includes songs that pay tribute to styles from Dub, Downtempo, IDM, Ambient, Dre-inspired beats, and yes even dubstep, and is chock full of the kind of irreverent lyrics and interludes that have made The Flying Skulls favorites in the underground electronic music scene.

The first pre-release from the album, “Beats by the Pound” includes funky, pitched down Mellotron and bass stabs from Philly band Lotus, old school jazz influenced choruses by Audio Angel, ripping verses by Cardiff Wales bad-boy Mudmowth over a track flavored with Steely Dan inspired electric guitar by Bender and robot sounds by Stevie Dubs.

This track marks the Flying Skulls’ third collaboration with Lotus, and second collaboration with Welsh MC Mudmowth, “Mud recorded these verses while in Cardiff, but last time I heard from him he was down in Indonesia living the good life,” said executive producer J.Tonal, “It’s fun to work with Mud on a track with the Lotus guys, their sense of melody is great, and we get to have Angel as the icing on top, sick!”

The Skulls second studio album, “West Coast Bass” is due out Oct 25 on 1320 Records.

Standout cuts like the title track and “Undisputed” pack enough bass to keep low end freaks happy, but possess enough melodic integrity from classic samples that everyone is getting something out of each track. From brooding to celebratory, each song runs the gamut of emotions that’ll keep audiences moving to the music. -Unitz.com
