I made this remix, first and foremost, for the love I have for Peter Gabriel and this track, but also to throw it into a new context. It’s slow, it’s dark, it’s a bit twisted. In the Narita Airport, safe from Japan’s brutal July heat, I find my seat at the terminal. I had been visiting my childhood friend in Chiba. I’m surrounded by dozens of musicians and their instruments; they’re on their way home from the Mt. Fuji Rock Festival. On the floor in front of me is a group of colorful characters squatted in a semicircle. I noticed their eclectic collection of instruments: bongos, didgeridoos, keyboards. I introduce myself to the fellow closest to me. He tells me his name’s Hunter and his band’s called Sound Tribe Sector 9. I explain to him that I also make music and share with him some of my songs on my portable CD player. He plays me some of his stuff too. I ask him to sign my sketchbook, which he does, then we go our separate ways.
That was nine years ago. We never contacted each other; after all, it was just a casual acquaintance.
Almost exactly 9 years later, I’m mixing my debut EP Every Minute of the Day at Different Fur studios in San Francisco with chief engineer Nic Pope. STS9 are also mixing their latest EP When the Dust Settles, also with Nic, but on different days. During one of their breaks they ask Nic to show them some of the other projects he’s working on and he pulls up some of my tunes. A few days later I get a message from one of the guys of STS9 saying that he was blown away by the EP and wants to get together. I call him back; it’s Hunter. “Hey, do you happen to remember meeting some kid in the Narita airport back in 2002 and signing his sketchbook?” I asked. Surprisingly, he does.

cutting edge beat scientists such as Ras G (Brainfeeder), Samiyam

Born in Taiwan R.O.C. to Rocket Scientist father and Kindergarten Teacher mother, David Wang (a.k.a. Mochipet) has been tinkering with electronics since he was a child. However, not until he added music to the equation, did something special begin to take shape. Having grown up listening to metal guitar, avant-garde jazz, and mainstream hip-hop, David’s eclectic taste can now be seen in his music – ever changing, and always evolving.

David has also held residencies at [Eraser] Club (Los Angeles) and Trouble Club (San Francisco) along side Djs: [a]pendics shuffle, edIT (Glitchmob), John Tejada, Josh Kit Clayton, Kid606, Matt Laszuk, Philip Sherburne, and Sutekh. He recently started a new monthly in San Francisco called Petnation, selling out the venue beyond capacity while showcasing both local and international acts.
His efforts have been recognized throughout the music community by way of nominations for titles including “Best Electronic Act of 2008” from publications such as Clash Magazine (UK) and San Francisco Bay Guardian. His composition “Dessert Search for Techno Baklava” has been performed by a 20 piece orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, around the world, most notably at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Amsterdam’s Holland Festival!
